Estimating Linear Trends: Simple Linear Regression versus Epoch Differences
نویسندگان
چکیده
Two common approaches for estimating a linear trend are 1) simple linear regression and 2) the epoch difference with possibly unequal epoch lengths. The epoch difference estimator for epochs of length M is defined as the difference between the average value over the last M time steps and the average value over the first M time steps divided by N 2 M, where N is the length of the time series. Both simple linear regression and the epoch difference are unbiased estimators for the trend; however, it is demonstrated that the variance of the linear regression estimator is always smaller than the variance of the epoch difference estimator for first-order autoregressive [AR(1)] time series with lag-1 autocorrelations less than about 0.85. It is further shown that under most circumstances if the epoch difference estimator is applied, the optimal epoch lengths are equal and approximately one-third the length of the time series. Additional results are given for the optimal epoch length at one end when the epoch length at the other end is constrained.

A matrix method for estimating linear regression coefficients based on fuzzy numbers
In this paper, a new method for estimating the linear regression coefficients approximation is presented based on Z-numbers. In this model, observations are real numbers, regression coefficients and dependent variables (y) have values for Z-numbers. To estimate the coefficients of this model, we first convert the linear regression model based on Z-numbers into two fuzzy linear regression mode...
متن کاملNew Approach in Fitting Linear Regression Models with the Aim of Improving Accuracy and Power
The main contribution of this work lies in challenging the common practice of inferential statistics in the realm of simple linear regression for attaining a higher degree of accuracy when multiple observations are available, at least, at one level of the regressor variable. We derive sufficient conditions under which one can improve the accuracy of the interval estimations at quite affordable ...
متن کاملESTIMATING THE PARAMETERS OF A FUZZY LINEAR REGRESSION MODEL
Fuzzy linear regression models are used to obtain an appropriate linear relation between a dependent variable and several independent variables in a fuzzy environment. Several methods for evaluating fuzzy coefficients in linear regression models have been proposed. The first attempts at estimating the parameters of a fuzzy regression model used mathematical programming methods. In this the...
متن کاملAnalysis of trends in birth outcomes and fertility measures in the rural population of east Azerbaijan province, Iran: 2001 - 2013
Background and Purpose: Birth outcomes and fertility measures are commonly evaluated in Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program (MCHIP) in the field of public health. Given the key role of time- trend study in the projection of current data to the future, this population-based study aimed to describe the significant changes of birth outcomes and fertility measures in the rural population...
متن کاملEstimating Height and Diameter Growth of Some Street Trees in Urban Green Spaces
Estimating urban trees growth, especially tree height is very important in urban landscape management. The aim of the study was to predict of tree height base on tree diameter. To achieve this goal, 921 trees from five species were measured in five areas of Mashhad city in 2014. The evaluated trees were ash tree (Fraxinus species), plane tree (Platanus hybrida), white mulberry (Morus alba), ail...
